Empathy

The apostle Peter counseled Christians to show ‘fellow feeling, brotherly affection and compassion.’ The apostle Paul recommended similar sentiments when he exhorted fellow Christians to “rejoice with people who rejoice; weep with people who weep.” What they are talking about is being empathetic to one another. The Greek word rendered “fellow feeling” literally means “to suffer with another” or “to have compassion.”

This has been an especially hard year for my co-workers, including myself with many others experiencing injury, life-threatening emergencies, surgery, accidents, illnesses – but nothing around here ever changes. We’re in a very unempathetic culture where’s theres never enough mutual respect towards one another.

It’s sad that in this environment there’s no one action that can fix the attitudes of others, you can only provide yourself as an example to follow, and forgive the unfeeling actions of others. But when it becomes a systemic problem that effects nearly everyone that’s within an earshot, it’s very hard to ignore.

Fortunately the Lord has provided us with a wonderful example.
